Yesterday, the Boys basketball team hosted long-time rival Kachina in the Multipurpose for the final game before the winter break. Desert Palms jumped to a quick lead scoring several baskets to start the fast-paced game 8-4. The Boys raced down the court time after time scoring quick baskets. At the end of the half, the Boys held a commanding lead.
Desert Palms was led in scoring by Jerome Frazier with 23 points followed by Zach Schumacher with 11. Aidan Higgins, Ben Cenanovich, and Raul Haro trapped Kachina forcing over a dozen turnovers.
When the final buzzer sounded, the Boys walked off the MPR court with a resounding win and their highest point total in 3 years.
Final score: Desert Palms 53 and Kachina 26.

The new Holiday Tournament is set. There are 6 teams in the event and the format is a 6 team Round Robin. This will allow everybody to play 5 games each. The schedule of games is listed below with dates, locations and times.

Pioneer @ DP 11-24-09

Desert Palms jumped to a quick lead scoring several baskets to pull ahead. The Boys fought hard to nullify Pioneer’s speed advantage with fast breaks and rebounds. At the end of the half, the Boys held a slim lead.

DP @ Canyon
Wednesday, the Lady Firebirds traveled to Canyon Elementary to take on the Coyotes for the final game of the regular season. The match-up featured the undefeated Lady Firebirds versus the struggling Coyotes. The game tipped off with both teams exchanging baskets in a grueling battle for rebounds. After the first quarter buzzer, the Lady Firebirds held a slight lead 8-4.
Leading all scorers from both teams was Tiphani with 16 points. Amy added 12, and Nicole finished with 6 points. Darielle and Justine played tough defense slowing Canyon’s best player and forcing turnovers.
Pressing well into the fourth quarter, the Lady Firebirds jumped passes and added steals until the scoreboard tipped in their favor. Marina’s fourth quarter basket sealed the deal and Desert Palms completed its first UNDEFEATED season in several years.

Marshall Ranch @ Desert Palms
Last night, the Marshall Ranch Roadrunners visited Desert Palms for the annual rivalry game on Eighth Grade Appreciation Night. The event featured a half-time performance by the Saguaro Skippers Jump Rope Club as well as certificates for all players, flowers for mothers, and a bag of chocolate for fathers after the contest. The game started off with both clubs exchanging baskets until the Roadrunners took a slim lead near the end of the 1st quarter. With seconds left in the first frame, Laura jumped a pass and dropped in a basket at the buzzer---the Lady Firebirds never looked back after that score.

The Lady Firebirds played in the bracket game of the Peoria Tournament last night. Cotton Boll opened the game with a quick 4-0 lead, but tough defense kept the game close and Cotton Boll held a slim 10-6 halftime lead.
Leading the lady Firebirds in scoring was Nicole with 5 points. Amy followed with four and Tiphani earned four as well with tough rebounding. Cotton Boll pressed the Lady Firebirds causing turnovers. Brenda, Laura, and Darielle played tight defense holding Cotton Boll to limited shots.
In the end, Cotton Boll prevailed, but not with a hard fought battle. The Lady Firebirds showed amazing character in the tournament and are a credit to our school and the community.

Straight off two wins in one night, the Lady Firebirds met Alta Loma Elementary in the final pool game before bracket play. The game started off with both clubs exchanging baskets until the score reached 10 each. With a strong rebound and shot by Tiphani, the Lady Firebirds edged Alta Loma by 2 points at the half.
Leading all scorers from both teams was Laura with 12 points. She fired in jump shots, lay-ups, and out rebounded Alta Loma in the paint. Tiphani added 12 points and Nicole finished with 8. Brenda, Abby, and Darielle played top-notch defense, stifling any shots attempted by Alta Loma. Justine ran 2 fast breaks driving past the defense and Marcella completed her free throws.

Desert Palms @ Heritage
The Lady Firebirds entered the regular season straight off a preseason win with Ira Murphy traveling to the Heritage Eagles. Heritage opened the game aggressively, forcing turnovers until Tiphani took over scoring three straight baskets in the first quarter alone. Desert Palms held a 6-4 advantage at the break. The Lady Firebirds pressed the Eagles holding Heritage to a lone basket in the second half, while adding 10 points themselves. The first half ended with a 16-6 Desert Palms' lead.
Desert Palms was led in scoring by Nicole and Tiphani with 14 points each. Megan added 4 and Amy 2. The game quickly fell out of reach as the Lady Firebirds raced to a 24-6 third quarter score due to Darielle's hustle for loose balls, Laura's feisty defense, and the tough play of Marina---grabbing errant passes and stopping Heritage's dribbling. Desert Palms vs Peoria
The Desert Palms Boys’ Basketball team entered their final game of the state tournament with a one win, one loss record. The game featured the high scoring Peoria Elementary squad versus the quick, tenacious defense of the Firebirds.
The game opened up with our Firebirds stealing passes and making quick lay-ups. The Boys grabbed a stunning 10-0 lead forcing the Peoria coach to call a timeout in the first minute of the game. Streaking down the court, the run and gun fast strike offense of Desert Palms struggled to keep the lead until late in the third quarter when Peoria took a six point lead.
The Boys were led in scoring by Michael Gallardo with 20 points. Michael Reed added 17 and Jon Foltz dropped in 10. With less then a minute left, both Michael Reed and Michael Gallardo added lay-ups to bring Desert Palms up by 1 point. Then, with seconds left, Michael Gallardo scored a free-throw to give the Boys a two point lead. Fighting off two Peoria players, Jon Foltz grabbed a rebound and crashed into the floor, quickly calling a time out to stop the clock with 4 seconds remaining. Desert Palms Tough Press!
Desert Palms' Boys Basketball team used a constricting press all season to contain their opponents' ball handlers. Featured on this video are Michael Gallardo, Isaiah lewis, and Michael Reed stopping another drive into their end of the court!
Desert Palms @ Copper King
Boys' State Tournament
The DP Boys' Basketball team played their first game in the state tournament Friday night. DP charged off to a 16-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. Michael Gallardo scored several lay-ups and jumpers to lead DP against Copper King. The Boys out rebounded their opponent forcing Copper King to push their shots and miss wide. As the game progressed, DP pulled away and quickly emptied the bench, getting everyone in the mix.
Efrain Garcia scored six points, but clearly out rebounded his man and hustled for every loose ball. He earned MVP of the game with his intensity and high energy.
Desert Palms was led by Michael Gallardo and Michael Reed with 8 points each. Efrain and Isaiah Lewis added 6 points each as well with Elija Cox scoring 4.

The Lady Firebirds pressed the Patriots in the second quarter grabbing several key steals to make the score 8 to 6 at the end of the half.

The Pioneer Elementary Patriots traveled to Desert Palms for a preseason scrimmage game between the two non-rival schools. Pioneer broke out to an early 9-0 lead dropping lay-ups and controlling the pace. The Lady Firebirds fought back taking the lead with Nicole shooting several key lay-ups in the final minutes. Nicole finished with 6 points, Laura scored 5, and Abby contributed 4 points. The Lady Firebirds were able to pull away for the win in the end.

Desert Palms played a high energy game at the mensendick Tournament losing to Wilson in a close game. Wilson took an early lead and the lady Firebirds were never able to pull even. The game featured many fouls as both squads played hard and fought for loose balls. Nicole ran the offense finding Amy open for baskets underneath.

Friday, February 6th, the Lady Firebirds took on Jack L. Kuban at the Apoolo Gym. The Lady Firebirds pressed their way into the lead with quick steals and lay-ups by Nicole and Tiphani. The score ran up to 18 to 5 by halftime with the Girls comfortably in the lead.
Nicole led all scorers with 16 points, controlling the offense and setting the team's pace. Tiphani added 9 and Abby contributed 4 points. Amy and Chelsea controlled the boards with rebounds while adding 2 points each. Jordan was a force inside bringing in the most rebounds and clearing out shooters. Cierra blocked one shot, smothering Kuban's attempts to score from outside.
Final Score: DP 33 Jack L. Kuban 11

Girls' Mensendick Game 1
The Lady Firebirds entered the Mensendick Tournament fresh off tryouts and put up a valiant effort against a superior team from Terramar. The Lady Firebirds worked hard with their new zone defense and held Terramar's scoring to under 10 points in the second half.
Final score: Terramar 34 Desert Palms 9

Girls' Mensendick Tournament
Parents and student athletes,
The Girls' team will be selected Monday, February 2nd at 3:15PM. Shortly after, we will conduct a brief 45 minute walkthrough/practice. Tuesday at 3:15 PM after school, we will have another short practice and the ladies will be released at 4 PM.
Our game is at 5:40 PM that evening. Please bring your student athlete to the Glendale YMCA located on 59th ave. just south of Greenway. We will not have a bus because this is a non-district game. Our contest is against Terramar.

Desert Palms vs Santa Fe District Tournament Game 1
The Boys started their district tournament run against Santa Fe at 10:30 AM on 1-24-09. Santa Fe started the see-saw contest scoring baskets to take a small lead with DP answering shot for shot. DP was able to take a slim lead: 17-16 at the half.
Michael Gallardo had an outstanding game leading ALL scorers with 24 points and controlling the tempo. Michael Reed added 11 points and Isaac Joya and Isiah Lewis added 2 each.
Santa Fe scored a basket with seconds left, but Michael Gallardo, Desert Palm's 2008-9 Most Valuable Player, sank a basket with one second left. Santa Fe was unable to answer at the buzzer.
Final score: Desert Palms 39 Santa Fe 38.

Canyon @ Desert Palms Boys 1-21-09
Last night the high scoring Desert Palms Boy’s basketball team hosted Canyon Elementary on Eight Grade Appreciation Night. Michael Gallardo was honored as the teams Most Valuable Player for the season, Wyatt Garner earned “Mr. Hustle”, Connor Higgins earned “Most Improved”, Jon Foltz was “Mr. Ironman”, and Elija Cox “Mr. Rebound”. Canyon had difficulty making jump shots and was only allowed a few inside shots by the Boys tough defense. Tommy Beebe led all rebounders controlling the boards on both ends. David Rodriguez controlled the offense setting up plays so Jerome Frazier could score eight points and Connor Higgins six. The final score: Desert Palms 48 and Canyon 32. The Boy’s record for the regular season: 4 wins and 2 losses. Next up: the boys play Saturday against Santa Fe in the District Tournament. Tip-off is at 10:30 AM at Kachina.
Desert Palms @ Marshall Ranch 1-15-09
Last night the high scoring Desert Palms Boy’s basketball team traveled to Marshall Ranch for a battle of first place. Both teams entered district play with three wins and one loss.The game started off low scoring with both teams hustling to lose balls, and collecting rebounds on both ends. The lead see-sawed throughout the 1st half and the stage was set for an exciting rivalry.Desert Palms was led in scoring by Michael reed with 13 points, five off of free throws. Michael Gallardo followed with 10, and Elija Cox scored nine. Jon Foltz collected the most rebounds while adding 6 points as well.With 38 seconds remaining in the contest, Michael Gallardo sunk a three-point basket tying the game at 43, sending a packed gym into a frenzy, but Marshall Ranch was able to shoot a handful of free-throws in the remaining seconds.Final score: Marshall Ranch 50 Desert Palms 43. Next up: the boys play Friday against Challenger Charter School in the YMCA Tournament. Tip-off is at 4:00 PM.
Desert Palms Boys @ Santa Fe 1-7-09
The Desert Palms Boy’s Basketball team traveled to Santa Fe with a 2 and 1 regular season record without Josh Brooks who had to sit out due to an ankle injury. Wednesday night’s game was a re-match of two hard fought contests from last year in which Santa Fe won both, including the district playoffs.The boys struggled to score buckets in the first quarter until Isiah Lewis stepped up with several key shots. The score remained close when Sante Fe sank a long shot to take the lead 17-15 at the end of the first half.Desert Palms was led in scoring by Michael Reed with 19 points followed by Michael Gallardo with 14 and Isiah Lewis with 11. Jon Foltz controlled the backboards with a ferocious intensity, leading all rebounders, while scoring 4 points as well. Conner Higgins closed the lanes, holding Santa Fe’s best player scoreless in the second half.Santa Fe chipped away at the Desert Palm’s 12 point lead, sinking a handful of three point shots closing the game to within a single basket, but the team effort on defense by Reed, Gallardo, and Lewis stopped Santa Fe cold.Final score: Desert Palms 51 and Santa Fe 45.Next up: the boys play Wednesday, January 14 at Marshall Ranch. Desert Palms @ Greenway Tournament
The Desert Palms Boy’s basketball team entered the Greenway Basketball Tournament with a 2 and 1 regular season record which included a two game win streak. Thursday night’s game was a match-up of a tough rebounding Ira Murphy team against the fast-paced offense of Desert Palms. Greenway’s wide and long high school court presented a challenge for both teams.The boys grabbed a quick 4-2 lead and then the battle began. Ira Murphy trapped the boys, slowing down their offense. The score see-sawed for the remainder of the half.Desert Palms was led in scoring by Michael Gallardo with 8 points followed by Michael Reed and Isaac Joya with six each. Elija Cox had another strong game bringing down over ten rebounds. The boys employed four different defenses in an attempt to break Ira Murphy’s attack on their basket.In the end, Desert Palm’s speed broke through and the boys were able to smash out with a ten point lead which the second team held. Elija Cox and Effron Garcia tallied four points each to lead the relief squad.Final score: Desert Palms 37 and Ira Murphy 25.Next up: the boys play tonight against Cholla in the Greenway Holiday Tournament. Kachina @ DP 12-17-09
Last night the high scoring Desert Palms Boy’s basketball team hosted Kachina in a one-sided game. Isiah Lewis grabbed the tip-off and DP set the tone quickly. With a barrage of jump shots and lay-ups, the boys ran the score in the first quarter to twenty to two.Kachina was unable to mount any form of attack and was paralyzed by the relentless defense of Jon Foltz, Jerome Frazier, Michael Reed, and Michael Gallardo. With the game out of reach so early, the first team sat and the second team roared into action. The boys were led by Elija Cox with 14 points, followed by Michael Gallardo with ten, and Jon Foltz with 8. Isaac Joya also added seven.Kachina was only able to put a meager twenty points on the board making the final score Desert Palms 61 and Kachina 20. The Desert Palms Boys basketball team played a thrilling game yesterday that came down to the final shot in front of a packed house in the multi-purpose room. Michael Gallardo led the team with 16 points. Michael Reed also scored 12 and Isaac Joya dished out 7 as well. Elija Cox led the team in rebounds with Michael Reed collecting nearly as many.
With less than 20 seconds left, the team set up the tying shot which was stopped by Heritage’s tough defense. The final score was Heritage 44 and Desert palms 41. The team plays at Sahauro Ranch next Wednesday at 430 PM.
